Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Fibromyalgia (FM) both cause pain and stiffness, but they are very different conditions and require different approaches to care. Lets take a closer look at Polymyalgia pain and its associated symptoms.
What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica? (PMR)
Polymyalgia is an inflammatory condition that affects tissues around the joints.
Usually affects adults over 50 (women more than men)
Causes severe morning stiffness and pain in the shoulders, neck, and hips
Blood tests show raised inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP)
Symptoms improve quickly with corticosteroids
And the difference with Fibromyalgia? (FM)
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition linked to how the nervous system processes pain. It is not inflammatory.
Can affect any age
Causes widespread pain, fatigue, poor sleep, and brain fog
Blood tests are typically normal
Managed with a multimodal approach including movement, pain management, and supportive therapies such as Acupuncture.
Key Differences between FM and Polymyalgia pain
Inflammation: PMR = Yes | Fibromyalgia = No
Pain location: PMR = Shoulders and hips | Fibromyalgia = Widespread
Response to steroids: PMR improves rapidly | Fibromyalgia does not
Age: PMR usually over 50 | Fibromyalgia any age
It’s possible for both conditions to coexist. If you’re unsure which condition may be affecting you, a medical assessment is essential. A rapid response to steroids often helps doctors confirm PMR.
Could Acupuncture help Polymyalgia pain? or FM?
Acupuncture can be considered as part of a supportive care plan, particularly for people living with fibromyalgia for pain relief.
It may also provide additional support to PMR sufferers when they can't sleep or have flare ups of inflammation, despite being on medication. The mechanisms of Acupuncture are evidence based, showing it can:
- Reduce inflammation (in cases of PMR) and manage pain intensity in both conditions.
- Help you get better sleep.
- Release neurotransmitters such as endorphins - the body's natural pain-killers and dopamine in cases where the chronic pain creates anxiety or low moods.
- Stimulate the Parasympathetic Nervous System - to calm, relax and switch into 'rest and digest' mode - where repair and recovery happens. Especially if these chronic conditions cause anxiety or stress during painful flare ups.
