Summer Body & Weight Loss.

Healthy Eating, Summer Body & Weight Loss

Summer calls for “beach-ready” energy, and healthy eating often takes centre stage. But for many people, the weight loss journey is frustrating. You may be asking: can acupuncture really help with weight loss?

What the research shows

There is some evidence that acupuncture in combination with diet and exercise might contribute to a bit more weight loss —

BUT not as a sole strategy, only as a supportive, adjunct therapy.

  • A 2024 meta-analysis found that when acupuncture was added to lifestyle interventions, it reduced body weight, BMI, waist circumference and body-fat percentage more than lifestyle interventions alone.

  • Another systematic review reported that acupuncture alone (without diet/exercise change) achieved about 1.56 kg more weight loss compared with sham or no treatment.

  • The shortfalls: These reviews emphasise moderate certainty of evidence and many studies had methodological issues (small sample sizes, short follow-ups, inconsistent controls).

  • Notably, one review found acupuncture plus lifestyle modification was significantly more effective than lifestyle change alone — but acupuncture by itself was not significantly better than sham acupuncture alone in people with obesity (BMI ≥30).

What this means in plain terms

If you’re hoping that acupuncture alone will deliver significant weight loss without dietary or activity changes, the evidence doesn’t support that.

  • Acupuncture’s role is likely as a support tool — for example helping with stress, improving sleep, easing digestive discomfort, or helping you stick with your behavioural change — rather than replacing fundamental work on food and movement.

Why healthy eating & exercise remain the foundation

  • Eating real, nutrient-dense foods, controlling portions, reducing refined sugar and processed foods, and being physically active remain the most reliable strategies.
  • Without those foundations, any extra benefit from acupuncture will be limited.

  • Here are some local Naturopaths and Nutritionists I can recommend who are more experienced in targeting Weight Loss for you:

How acupuncture can help within a weight-loss goal

  • STRESS RELIEF: which can lower cortisol levels and reduce stress-driven eating.

  • AID BETTER SLEEP: which in turn supports appetite regulation, metabolism, and energy.

  • GET YOU MOVING AGAIN: It may ease digestive or pain issues that interfere with exercise or consistent movement.

So… should you use acupuncture?

Let's recap those realistic expectations:

  • Approach it as one element in your strategy, not on it's own or as a whole solution.

  • Commit to strong, sustainable dietary changes and a regular physical activity plan first.

  • Use acupuncture as a tool to support your consistency, reduce barriers, and help maintain momentum.

  • If you choose to use Acupuncture, consult with a trained practitioner who will use Acupuncture integrated with your Doctor or Nutritionist's advice. I'm a degree qualified, AHPRA registered TCM practitioner who generally refers clients to the Naturopath links above for weight loss support, based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
